If you are at risk for osteoporosis, there is good news for prevention. At Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, recent research suggests that vitamin C may help build bones and help prevent osteoporosis. Between lab mice whose ovaries had been removed (leading to reduced bone density) and those with intact ovaries, sub groups were either given vitamin C or a standard diet. The mice who had their ovaries removed and were given vitamin C had the same bone density as the mice with intact ovaries. Further research will determine the applicability to humans, but these results are very promising for strengthening bones and fighting osteoporosis.
