The American Heart Association’s journal Stroke has published a study showing that participating in group yoga can be beneficial in restoring balance to stroke patients. Quality of life and independence were also improved as participants were less afraid of falling, and felt better sooner. Leading researcher Arlee Schmid, Ph.D., said, “It has to do with the confidence of feeling more mobile…these were very meaningful changes in life for people.” The size and lack of diversity in the study do not provide substantial proof of yoga’s benefit to stroke patients, however, researchers believe larger studies in the future will be more conclusive.
