Everyone needs to go, but did you know that many Americans struggle with constipation? That’s why Dr. Mark Hyman recommends natural solutions for those who want to get things flowing again!
Dr. Hyman notes that about 63 million Americans have constipation problems. Many may not even realize that they have a problem. For instance, you may think to need to go once a day is normal, but Dr. Hyman suggests that 2 twice a day is ideal. Constipation can lead to worse conditions, such as cancer or even Parkinson’s disease.
The first thing that Dr. Hyman recommends is to begin eating a diet of real, whole foods. Get rid of foods that contain lots of sugars or are highly processed as these contribute to constipation. Make sure that you include foods rich in fiber, such as:
- Flaxseeds
- Seeds
- Nuts
- Beans
Dr. Hyman warns to not eliminate fats from your diet, as fat is needed to maintain healthy digestion and low-fat diets also contribute to constipation. Include in your meals:
- Olive oil
- Salmon
- Sardines
- MCT oil
Also, make sure that you are getting enough nutrients from your diet. Magnesium is one nutrient that aids in digestion. Vitamin C also helps with moving along the digestive tract. Consider supplements to make sure you are getting what you need. Don’t forget too about probiotics for maintaining a healthy gut flora.
Another thing you can do for your digestion is to drink lots of water (between 6-8 glasses daily and to exercise. If you try these solutions but still are having constipation, Dr. Hyman recommends getting your thyroid checked.
Although everyone poops, not everyone has a healthy digestive tract. Part of being healthy means making sure that your body can effectively void waste and toxins so that that they don’t build up and negatively affect your health.
