A new research study published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice suggests that mindfulness yoga may help alleviate depressive symptoms in expecting mothers. In some psychiatrically high risk individuals, pregnancy hormones can lead to major depression. Mental health issues during pregnancy can prove a serious problem, but expectant mothers are often reluctant to expose themselves and their children to antidepressants, creating a significant need for effective alternatives. Participants in the study reported reductions in depressive symptoms and a strengthened attachment to their babies in utero after a 10 week mindfulness yoga intervention.
