Patients face many complex challenges in getting properly diagnosed with thyroid disease. Thyroid diagnosis can be complex and missed by uninformed doctors who believe that it can be ruled out by simply looking at and feeling the glands of a patient rather than through a thorough clinical thyroid exam. Some practitioners may also be unwilling to run thyroid tests for various reasons, and even after being tested, patients may be told that their tests are “normal” based on the controversial practice of diagnosing hypothyroidism only through a thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) test, which may not reliably reflect the actual circulating levels of thyroid hormone.
