Patients with coronary heart disease may benefit from traditional acupuncture, according to a new study by the Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Dr. Puja K. Mehta reported on the study, in which 151 patients received either traditional acupuncture, sham acupuncture, or were wait-listed as a control for the procedure. Heart rate variability (HRV) was improved in recipients of traditional acupuncture, and Dr. Mehta suggested the results may be even better outside of a controlled study. The treatment looks promising and may reduce the risk of sudden death in heart disease patients.
