Insomnia
Insomnia, the inability to either fall asleep or stay asleep, affects over one third of all adults at some point in their lives. Insomnia has numerous potential causes, such as psychiatric or mental conditions, poor sleep hygiene, interfering substances, such as caffeine, alcohol, or prescription drugs, hormone imbalances, glucose dysregulation, neurologic conditions, and more.
Many patients will report that they struggle with their sleep 3-4 nights out of 7. Over time, this causes many additional issues, such as fatigue and cognitive problems.
Examples of medical conditions that can cause insomnia are:
- Nasal/sinus allergies
- Gastrointestinal problems, such as reflux
- Endocrine problems, such as hyperthyroidism
- Arthritis
- Asthma
- Neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease
- Chronic pain
- Low back pain
Medications, such as those taken for the common cold and nasal allergies, high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid disease, birth control, asthma, and depression, can also cause insomnia.
Sleep disturbances can interfere with daytime hours through fatigue and even mild depression.
At Holistica, we do an exhaustive review of all of the potential causes of insomnia during your comprehensive new patient intake. We will recommend several tests that will help us understand better what is going on with your hormones, such as cortisol, thyroid, reproductive hormones, and even neurohormones, such as serotonin, epinephrine, GABA, glutamate, and more.
Our goal is to find the source of the insomnia and treat that rather than masking sleep disturbances with medication and other substances that do not address the underlying issue.
Many people have tried “everything” to treat their insomnia and feel helpless that they will never be able to get a good night’s sleep. Our approach is to widen the lens and look beyond the typical reasons that people do not sleep, such as looking at chronic infections and even exposure to mold, which can create neurologic impairments.
Holistica’s doctors are well trained in treating sleep disorders naturally. We provide services in the Boulder Denver area and we invite you to call us at 303-449-3777 for a 15-minute free consultation to discuss any questions and concerns you may have about your specific needs and therapy.
