Do you enjoy including turmeric to spice up your meals? You may have heard how it can be helpful for your health. It’s true. However, if you take too much turmeric, there can be side effects that have a negative impact.
Turmeric is a spice that is derived from the turmeric plant. Its main ingredient is curcumin. It has been shown that turmeric can help with lowering one’s risk for cancer, as well as aide in treating other medical problems such as:
- Inflammation
- Neurodegenerative problems
- Upset stomach
Again, like anything in life, there is such a thing as, “Too much of a good thing.” This is especially true if you have turmeric every day. One issue is that turmeric prevents blood from clotting. This is a problem for those prone to bleeding disorders or who are older.
Two conditions that can worsen with too much turmeric are Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and gallstones. If you have either of these conditions then you should not consume too much turmeric. Additionally, turmeric can cause kidney stones to develop. This is because it has oxalate.
Beware of using turmeric when pregnant. The spice has a stimulating quality to it which can trigger uterine contractions. This is a big problem if you are still early in your pregnancy. If used in the later months of your pregnancy turmeric can induce labor. It is recommended that you not use turmeric while pregnant or nursing.
People who are allergic to turmeric may experience
- Inflamed and itchy skin
- Nausea
- Cramping
- Vomiting
- Flatulence
Interestingly, turmeric in supplement form can lower testosterone and sperm motility in men. This is a big problem if you and your partner are trying to conceive a child.
Other problems associated with too much turmeric include:
- Headaches
- Diabetes
- Low iron levels
- Decreased blood pressure
- Stomach problems
