Do you suffer from migraines? If so, you’ll be interested in a post by Suzy Cohen, RPh. She discusses how recent research found a connection between migraines and the thyroid.
What is hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism occurs when the human body either doesn’t make enough hormones or the body’s cells can’t absorb it. This can cause a lot of medical problems, such as:
- Altered mood, including anxiety
- Losing your hair
- Heart issues
- Feeling tired, low energy
- Gaining weight
- Feeling you are cold
- Increased body weight
Interestingly, Cohen notes that people who take a statin medication for cholesterol may actually be at greater risk for hyperthyroidism.
A research study published in The Journal of Head and Face Pain discusses this connection. It included over 8,000 people who, over the course of twenty years, provided data. This information includes how often they experienced migraines or even headaches. The researchers found that those who had migraines, “almost always,” had hypothyroidism. Talk about a connection!
Cohen stresses that a migraine diagnosis necessitates a check for hypothyroidism by your doctor.
What’s the link between hypothyroidism and migraines?
She also mentions how your diet can play a role in causing headaches. She found that foods and beverages containing histamine or were fermented were the culprits. These included:
- Wine
- Kombucha
- Cold cuts.
- Salami
- Hot dogs.
- Aged cheese
- Cough and cold medicines.
- Antihistamines
- Select antibiotics.
- Antidepressants
