In an article published on her blog, Suzy Cohen, RPh, writes how she believes there is a connection between our diets and autoimmune diseases. These include serious diseases such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and other conditions. Her solution to this problem is simple: eliminate foods that could trigger these diseases.
Autoimmune Disease Triggers
Cohen notes in her article that all of us are exposed to elements that she refers to as being “NON-SELF.” These are things that come from outside the body. They include:
- Pesticides
- Mold
- Dust
- Pet hair/dander.
- Medications
- Seeds
- Flowers
- Spices
Because we are surrounded by these and other sources every day, Cohen says that we all, to a certain degree. have an autoimmune disease. Consequently, we may be dragging ourselves around without even realizing that there could be a serious problem. She recommends testing to determine whether you have an autoimmune disease.
Of all of the substances that could compromise your health, Cohen puts special emphasis on foods made with gluten. These include foods that are made with grain, fermented beverages, or foods with sugar. She says that gluten changes the composition of the gut, allowing in substances that shouldn’t get into your digestive system.
To prevent this from happening, Cohen recommends that you should eliminate all gluten from your diet. Instead, eat a diet rich in vegetables, protein, as well as some seeds and nuts.
Foods to Avoid
Besides typical grains such as bread products, she also advocates that you get rid of:
- Corn
- Milk and dairy products.
- Rice
- Eggs
- Barley
- Coffee
All of these foods contain elements that trick the body into thinking that it is processing gluten. Cohen also recommends several things you can do to support your body if it is struggling to combat an autoimmune disease. These include:
- Turmeric
- Resveratrol
- Vitamin D and E
- Lactic-acid bacteria for probiotics.
- Digestive enzymes.
- Omega fatty acids.
- Not eating foods with trans-fats.
