People with thyroid problems may someday benefit from regenerative medicine. Regenerative medicine works by preventing and treating disease by repairing missing or damaged cells and tissues. Recent animal studies have showed success using stem cells to regenerate thyroid tissue, which scientists hope will someday lead to repairing human thyroids rather than using synthetic hormones to treat thyroid disease. In a sample study in mice, eight out of nine mice with thyroid problems that were treated with regenerative medicine had a complete return to normal thyroid levels. Thyroid treatment using regenerative medicine may still be years away, but the scientific community is extremely encouraged by recent research.
