A healthy diet can significantly improve general health and prognosis in chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, writes Elizabeth Yarnell. Two dietary plans are recommended by the American College of Preventive Medicine for preventing chronic disease and combatting weight gain: the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, and the Mediterranean diet. Both diets are heavy in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and emphasize eating whole, unprocessed rather than pre-packaged and processed food products.
