Increasing numbers of service members—more than 1,800 since 2003–returning from the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan are unable to have children as a result of injuries sustained to their reproductive systems. To better meet these veterans’ reproductive health needs, Senator Patty Murray of Washington has recently introduced a bill that would expand access to fertility treatments for disabled veterans and their families. Although the Veterans Affairs Department currently does offer some fertility services, in vitro fertilization (IVF) is not allowed except to active-duty service members through the Defense Department. Senator Murray’s bill seeks to change this, enabling veterans in need to access this and other family-oriented services.
