A new tool from the botanical world may provide another way to treat alcohol abuse and dependence. Researchers at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School recently published the findings of their study in Drug and Alcohol Dependence. According to David Penetar, PhD., “Our study is further evidence that components found in kudzu root can reduce alcohol consumption.” Puerarin, the least potent part of the kudzu plant was used, and the results show that participants’ baseline drinking levels lowered: they drank less and took smaller sips than before treatment with puerarin. Penetar emphasizes the need for further study.
