Those diagnosed with hyperthyroidism or Graves’ disease, have thyroids that produce too much of the thyroid hormone. In 1-2% of these patients, a condition known as thyroid storm may develop. This is a very dangerous and life-threatening situation, and must be treated immediately. During a thyroid storm event, blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature flare to an uncontrollable level. Risk factors include advanced age, being female, and not receiving treatment for Graves’ disease. Treatment includes anti-thyroid drugs, blockade iodine drugs, and beta-blockers. If you are concerned you may be experiencing a thyroid storm, seek emergency treatment immediately.
